Toyota RunX 180 RX -
January 2005 report

Broadcast dates : 23rd January 2005
27th January 2005

Open road cruising is something the Toyota RunX 180 RX does as effortlessly as it handles a city commute.

Blowing out the cobwebs on country roads sees the torquey one-comma-eight-litre motor come into its own. Rated at a hundred kiloWatts and 171 Newton Metres, the four-cylinder engine is happy to stay in fifth gear all day.

In fact changing up and down the five-speed ‘box is more in the interests of fun than necessity, unless there are some serious hills or overtaking in store.

We’re getting used to the gear change on our RunX as the kilometers build up, but it still demands some precision from the driver.

It doesn’t like to be rushed, especially at high revs. Talking of revs, the engine is loosening up nicely and is happy to spin effortlessly to the red-line.

But we’ve been on a fuel economy drive lately. On the open road the Run X can return an average in the seven-comma-five-litres per hundred kilometres range. The instant read out on the trip computer shows that this can drop to five-litres litres per hundred kilometres on a downhill cruise.

Overall we’ve been averaging eight-comma-seven litres per hundred including lots of city driving, which is pretty good.

Cruising at a hundred-and-twenty kilometres-per-hour, the stability is good on the RunX and the steering enables accurate placement of the car.

But the steering is light and sensitive to inputs, so you have to keep your concentration levels up.

The remote audio controls on the steering wheel are great to use on long journeys and the sound system, which includes a CD front loader, offers up impressive levels of bass for a factory installation.

All in all the RunX continues to impress in an understated, effortless way.

And, of course, one just like this, brand spanking new, is up for grabs in Car Torque’s win-a-car competition.
