VW Golf GTi

Broadcast dates : 10th April 2005
16th April 2005

It’s finally arrived – the most-anticipated performance car this year is Volkswagen’s fifth-generation Golf GTi. The question is… Will this GTi recapture the original magic?

Well, if appearances are anything to go by, the GTi once again has The Right Stuff. Inarguably a Golf, yet substantially different.

The use of black paint is a reversal on the colour-coded performance trend, and what this has done is reduce the bulk of the flanks and the rear bumper.

The wheels on our test car were seventeen-inch alloys of a scalloped design, while eighteen-inch rims are optional.

The look is very integrated, avoiding any add-on frivolity.

At the heart of that mission-statement is the new FSi, or direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine.

It develops 147 kilowatts, and one senses it’s under-stressed at this power level.

Its engine-note hints at restrained power rather than strained high-performance.

0-100 takes 7,2 seconds for the six-speed manual version, and just 6,9 seconds for the optional DSG transmission. And it has the driveline and chassis to match the match the engine.

A somber interior for a Golf is somewhat of a tradition. It hints at a seriousness of purpose, and this extends to the remarkable mix of ride-comfort and grip.
The GTi is fitted with traction control, but its interference with the driver’s fun is minimal. No drastic mid-corner power-cuts for the GTi.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the new Golf GTi is that, despite substantial size and weight gains over the generations, this one has regained its sense of driving fun.
