Audi’s
new A4 range comes in a bewildering array of models.
There are no less than 31 of these, with engines ranging
from 1,8 litre turbos, through 2-litres, petrol and
diesel, 3-litre petrol, to 3,2 litre V6 petrol
models.
Then there are four transmission options.
But when all is said and done, there’s no denying that
the Audi S4 is king of the mountain.
Subtle detailing, including the quad tail-pipes, tells the
story of the performance Audi.
The latest version of the S4 is more dramatic though, that
1930s Auto-Union grille speaking of days when the four
rings motif dominated Grand Prix racing.
The interesting aspect of the performance car dust-up in
Germany is that all the manufacturers try radically
different combinations of engines, induction systems as
well as drive trains.
The S4 uses V8 power, a six-speed manual ‘box and
Quattro drive
As a point of fact, when Car Magazine tested a
pre-face-lift S4 they achieved a top speed of 265
kilometers per hour, measured with the latest GPS system.
This made it the fastest production saloon in the country.
It’s subtle, stealthy and comfortable too.
The Quattro system imparts great stability, both in
corners and under braking. And the rest of the chassis is
up to scratch.

The S4 is also a great cruiser,
being very refined.
The unique charm of the Audi S4 is that, despite its serious
performance credentials, it can double so adeptly as a family
chariot.
Yet, come a Friday drag meeting and it can live with the best of
them in the sedan class.
Come Saturday and it can double as a wedding car. And that’s
what we like about the Audi S4!
