The latest-generation SL shape has
been around since 2001 and still it looks fresh. But it’s
in the details that the new SL 65 AMG really sets the juices
a-flowing.
The hard-edged mesh grilles are SL 65 specific, as are the
brutal quad tailpipes. And then there’s the improved air
suspension, still with adjustable ride height.
The V12 is similar to the unit used in the S 600 flagship sedan,
but with AMG deep tissue massaging, it’s pumped to 450
kilowatts, and 1000 Newton metres of torque. And each engine is
hand-built.
The black mesh detailing is carried through as a theme on the SL
65 on various parts of the body. It’s these subtle changes
that denote its breeding.
That special aura carries through to the interior. Our test car
was out-fitted with a stunning red leather interior.
The seats have an AMG-specific fluting and perforation pattern.
Naturally they are electrically adjustable with a multi-contour
function and seat heating.
The SL 65 gets a special AMG instrument cluster with, Alcantara
surrounding trim, available either in metal or wood.
The steering wheel has gearshift buttons, while the integrated
"infotainment" display includes navigation with DVD
technology and high level audio.

This big steel-roofed roadster is not a supercar. It’s a Gran
Turismo built for gobbling up the kilometers on the autobahn,
where there are no speed limits.
And for this reason it comes with all the electronic driver-aids
– or safety nets – as we sometimes call them.
The electric fold-away steel roof instantly turns the GT into a
convertible, with the accent on cruising. And this is a car with
a dual personality in more ways than one.
The Jekyll and Hyde nature of the Benz extends to dynamic areas
too, such as the preferred transmission mode.
But let’s not forget that 450 kiloWatts and 1000 Newton-metres
of torque is always on tap at the prod of the accelerator pedal.
