Renault Modus 1.4 Dynamique

Broadcast dates : 26th June 2005
2nd July 2005

The Modus was launched in France just eight months ago. Itís as if the designer came home one night and said: "Honey, I shrunk the Scenic"

The Modus, in point of fact, is less than two centimeters longer than the Clio hatch. But itís long wheelbase and high roof-line has freed up acres of interior space. The luggage space, though, is decidedly un-Scenic.

The engine bay, too, is cramped to say the least, and DIY types will happily leave servicing to their trusty Renault agents.

By contrast, the vast expanse of dashboard and modular instrumentation gives a feeling of wide-open space behind the wheel.

The Modus is offered here in three basic models. The range kicks off with the 1,2 litre Authentique. The intermediate model is the 1,4 litre Expression.
Our test model was the range-topping 72 kiloWatt 1,4 Dynamique, distinguished from the outside by colour-coded bumpers, alloy wheels and metal-finish door handles.

The 1,4 Dynamique uses a 16-valve 4-cylinder engine, mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Like most Renault motors, itís not a high-revving unit, with peak-power delivered at 5750 rpm.

0-100 k/ph at sea level is claimed at 11,45 seconds, with top speed at 177 kilometres per hour.

Suspension is very conventionalÖ MacPherson struts up front are complemented by a simple torsion beam and coil-springs at the rear.

Nevertheless the Modus rides well, and is stable at high speeds. Itís also equipped with Electronic Brake Distribution, ABS, and Brake Assist.

The Modus 1,2 sells for R110 000, while the top-of-the-line 1,4 Dynamique comes in at R135 000.

Thatís a competitive price when measured against the likes of Hondaís Jazz, the Smart ForFour and even Renaultís own Clio 1,6.
