Mercedes-Benz CLS500

Broadcast dates : 10th July 2005
16th July 2005

Mercedes has gone for a traditional old-world interior for the CLS. Soft leather, polished metal and finely-etched numerals on the instruments are all part of the new Mercedes design direction.

The curvy exterior is echoed in the interior panel fit, and Car Torque is on record that this car could well be a German Jaguar.

Our CLS test car was the five-hundred, fitted with the five-litre V8 engine. It has strong acceleration, unobtrusive automatic shifting and a mellifluous exhaust note to go with its beauty.

The CLS also uses the Airmatic air suspension system which provides an exceptional ride quality, no matter what the speed.

Other hi-tech features include an advanced adaptive damping system, and Sensotronic brake control, which automatically applies the best braking pressure to each wheel, depending on the driverís braking action.

And start-off assist automatically holds the car still on a gradient before pulling away.
Car Torque loved the CLS but there are some who donít like its looks. Particularly controversial are the rear lights, which have been likened to those of a mid-1990s Ford Falcon.
