A
new entrant in the 2005 World Touring Car Championship
is Chevrolet.
The team is entering under the Chevrolet Europe
banner, and running a team of medium-sized Optra
models, otherwise known as Daewoo Nubiras in some
markets.
The cars are being prepped and run by the famous Ray
Mallock team, which took Vauxhall to the British
Touring Car title a few years ago.
The WTCC competition is for two-litre four-cylinder
series-produced cars, although the race machines have
little in the way of standard components beneath their
innocent exteriors.
The engine produces over two-hundred kilowatts at
eight-thousand four-hundred rpm, and can accelerate
the Optra to a hundred kilometres-per-hour in under
five seconds, giving the car a top speed of over
two-hundred and fifty kilometres-per-hour, depending
on circuit gearing.
Transmission is through the front wheels, and a racing
spec six-speed sequential gearbox is used.
The driver line-up is strong, and includes past
touring car champions Alan Menu and Nicola Larini.
South African enthusiasts, of course, have been hoping
for a General Motors return to motorsport locally
through its sporty Opel brand.
