Peugeot 1007

Broadcast dates : 8th January 2006
14th January 2006

"The Car with the Sliding Doors". Thatís what the 1007 is going to be known as. Its electro-hydraulic portals are the distinguishing feature of an otherwise ultra-modern design.

Basically, the new Peugeot is a five-seater city car with an ability to cover long distances, thanks to a reasonably powerful engine.

Peugeotís interior make-over pack for the 1007 is known as the Cameleo Concept. You can pop into your local dealer and order a set of dash pads. Vent surrounds and zip-in seat inserts in a completely different colour scheme. Itís a bit like hopping into a new car every other week!

The Peugeot 1007 is an unusual concept. A citycar-cum-MPV-cum-fashion statement. But dynamically it does have flair.

The 1007 is fitted with Peugeotís 80 kiloWatt four-cylinder engine and itís well-suited to the car. Itís a little on the limp side in the torque department, but it likes to rev and the car has a useful turn of speed when you get it wound up.
But for some reason itís only available with an electro-hydraulic, clutchless gearbox, with paddle-shift operation.

It has the usual full-auto and manual modes, but like so many of these systems, it spoils what is otherwise a very good car.

On the plus side, the 1007 is one of the safest cars on the road, having scored the highest-ever results in the Euro N-Cap safety test. And thereís an overall feeling of quality that prevails in this innovative, quirky machine.

With familiarization, you do get used to the transmission, and from a design point of view itís bristling with innovations. The 1007 is one of the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists 2006 Car of the Year finalists.
