There’s no doubt that the Audi
A8 has reached iconic status amongst journalists. Car
Magazine, for instance recently rated it as its top luxury
sedan. At Car Torque we’re not convinced.
The problem the A8 has going for it is that it can very well
be perceived as just another Audi. It’s not strikingly
different in appearance from the A6, for instance.
Will the diesel version bridge the gap?
The first good news is that this one refined oil burner.
Minimal combustion clatter, and yes, seen in elegant
surroundings the car does have grace. And pace too on the open
road.
One of the criticisms we have of the Audi is that it doesn’t
offer as refined a ride as its competitors,
In this class of car, handling, lateral G-force grip, and
razor-sharp turn-in are secondary to a car that may very well
be chauffeur driven.
Comfort is king in this class and to us the Audi is a bit too
rigid, hunkered down, so to speak.
As for the engine choice, at the fuel pumps you’ll be very
well pleased.
But ultimately, we feel a petrol power plant still adds that
indefinable aura of refinement that a diesel lacks.
