Toyota Yaris T1

Broadcast date : 7th January 2007

There’s an old adage amongst motoring journalists that if you want to divine a car’s essence, you should start with least-expensive model. Does this apply with Toyota’s cheapest, and arguably cutest model on our market?

What you get is a great little three-cylinder engine, also used by other manufacturers in a joint venture with the Peugeot-Citroen group. The motor has a lovely engine note and is good for 51 kiloWatts, which is no mean feat from just 996 cc’s.

Car Magazine recently tested the Yaris T1 and achieved a mid 15 second 0-100 time, and a top speed of 158 km/h.

More interesting to most customers in this department, however is fuel consumption, with figures in the 6,5 l/100km range on the cards for this tiddler.

The T1 is available in both three door and five-door form, but this is the three-door model at R89 990, although air-con brings the price to just shy of R100 000.

Even for large occupants the Yaris impresses with its interior space packaging, as it does with its bright-‘n’-breezy interior. To our minds this remains Toyota’s most contemporary styling exercise to date.

The Yaris has good cheer as one of its core values, and it’s designed to appeal to young and old, male and female.

The rear seats are foldable in a standard 60-40 split, and variable luggage space is attainable as the rear seat itself moves backwards and forwards. Rear headroom is good, and head restraints are provided for all occupants.

As a runabout it’s quite impressive.

Up on The Reef with thin air reducing power by an estimated 17 per cent, the T1’s engine takes a bit of acclimatisation, despite its great three-cylinder sound.

We found the more time we spent with the Yaris, the easier it was to live with the little engine. Fenly, however, was not entirely convinced, although overall she loved the tiny Toyota.
