Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG

The Mercedes-Benz CLS shape is a masterpiece. Mercedes designs are normally noted for their unobtrusiveness, but not so this one, which we previewed on Car Torque way back in 2004 following the CLSís pre-production showing at the Geneva Motor Show.

At the time Merc made a lot of play on it being a four-door coupe, but we think itís simply beautiful.

So many people are now saying they never liked the CLS at first, but that it has that "certain something".

Weíre not quite sure where the 63 moniker comes from, as in fact the new range of AMG V8s displace just over 6,2 litres.

No matter really, because the 63 series motor from down Alfalterbach way is sweeter in naturally-aspirated form than it was when employing a supercharger to force-feed 5,5 litres of V8 in the previous-generation 55 series models.

Power output at 378 kiloWatts is a slightly higher rating than the 368 kilowatts of the supercharged model.

But at Reef altitude, the supercharged motor loses a calculated 5 per cent of its coastal urge, whereas without forced-induction the losses are around 17 per cent.

At sea level, look forward to a sub 5 second 0-100 sprint, and a top-speed of 250 km/h next time you happen to be on a race track.

With cars like the BMW M5 and M6, a plethora of AMG Merc models, Audi RSís, Porsches, Ferraris, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis and Morgan Aeros all seeming to find ready homes in our strange country of fiscal contrasts, one wonders where their owners get a chance to use the power.

Well, at least the CLS has family car attributes, like a proper boot and real-world rear leg-room.
