This is the interior of the
Mazda6 MPS. Hmmm. Black panelling, polished metal high-lights,
sort-of-sporting instrumentation. And a seven-speaker Bose
audio system. Neat… well put together… classy… But
exciting?
Gugu feels a hot-hatch would have given Mazda’s rather so-wha-tish
image a much bigger boost on the South African market.
In fact the original Mazda6 with its overt boot wing looked
more dramatic.
There’s simply nothing about the Mazda6 MPS’s styling to
tell you that this is a very special model, with a
turbocharged engine and four-wheel-drive.
It looks like a competent, crisp sedan, with luxury detailing.
It’s all of those things, but whose going to know there’s
more in store?
The turbocharged, intercooled 2,3 litre four-cylinder engine
is a typically strong Mazda performance unit, revving
impressively to 6500 rpm in a strong consistent whoosh of
power.
Peak output is 191 kilowatts, and the torque peak of 380
Newton metres is realised at 3000 rpm, making for a
wonderfully workmanlike performance unit.
The four-wheel-drive set-up features constantly variably
torque transfer between the front and rear axles, and the
double-wishbone suspension at the front, with a multi-link
set-up at the rear, provides extremely competent levels of
grip.
It’s also a quick car, with a mid 6-second 0-100 and a 240
km/h top whack.
And remains perfectly poised through fast sweeps, where
four-wheel-drive comes into its own.

Buck for your car, car for your buck, the Mazda6 MPS is the
definitive wolf in sheep’s clothing.
As for a more overt Mazda performer. Wait for the Mazda3 MPS.
